October 1948 saw a deadly ecological disaster befall the little mill town of Donora: a toxic smog that blanketed the town for six days and left twenty-one people dead and made hundreds more ill. Author Andy McPhee tells the fascinating story of how this tragedy came to pass, how the workers and residents of Donora were affected as mills began to close, and how the catastrophe led to the passing of the country's first clean air act in 1955.
